Facial hair and beard removal

The most common goal, and the biggest project.

Removing a beard for good is one of the most rewarding things we do. It's also one of the biggest jobs in electrolysis, so it helps to know what to expect.

It's permanent

Electrolysis treats each follicle directly, so treated hairs don't grow back. It's the only method the FDA allows to be called permanent hair removal.

For good, not for now

It treats every hair

Grey, blonde, red and fine hairs, and hair on darker skin. Electrolysis gets the hairs laser can't.

No hair left behind

Hormones help, but don't finish it

Hormone therapy can soften and slow facial hair over time, but it doesn't remove the hair that's already there.

You can start any time

Laser can help too

For dense, dark beards, some clients thin things out with laser first, then come to us to finish. We're happy to talk through what makes sense.

Work smarter, not longer
Good to knowWe need to see each hair to treat it, which means letting your hair grow for 3 to 5 days before a visit. We know that can be hard with facial hair. Tell us, and we'll work with you on timing, like treating one section at a time so the rest can stay shaved.

The Bellwoods System

What most clients experience.

Every plan is set at your first visit. Facial hair removal usually means more hours than other areas, so we plan for that from the start.

Weeks 1 to 2

Clear

Longer visits to clear the whole area once. You won't see a difference in growth yet.

Often a little longer

Reduce

Regular visits to catch regrowth. For a full beard this phase often runs past month 8. By the end, hair grows back slower, finer and less dense.

Through month 24

Live your life

You're barely thinking about your hair, and book a visit as new hairs grow in.

Planning a big project?

Facial hair removal often means a lot of hours, which is exactly what our prepaid Bellwoods System packages are for: 15 hours at 20% off, or 32 hours at 25% off. Try the estimator with your areas to see a typical plan.

Gender-affirming care questions

The questions everyone asks.

Do I need to be on hormones first?

No. You can start electrolysis whenever you're ready. Hormone therapy can soften and slow facial hair over time, but it doesn't remove hair that's already there.

How long does beard removal take?

It's one of the bigger projects in electrolysis, and it depends on how dense your hair is. Most clients have regular visits for longer than other areas. Try the estimator with your areas and “A lot” of hair to see a typical plan.

Should I do laser or electrolysis?

Both can play a part. Laser can thin out dense, dark hair, and electrolysis removes every hair that's left, including grey, blonde and fine hairs. Many clients use both. We're happy to talk it through.

Do I have to grow out my facial hair?

For 3 to 5 days before each visit, so we can see every hair. We know that can be hard. Tell us, and we'll work with you on timing, like treating one section at a time.

Will my insurance cover it?

Many Ontario workplace benefits plans include gender affirmation coverage, and electrolysis is often part of it. You'll usually need a note from your doctor. Here's how to check your coverage and claim.

Will you use my name and pronouns?

Yes. Tell us what you'd like to be called when you book, and that's what we'll use.

Does facial electrolysis hurt?

Most clients describe a quick snap or sting. The upper lip is the most sensitive area, and numbing cream makes a big difference. We always start on low settings and adjust to your comfort.
