How to prepare for your appointment

Shaving Before Your Appointment

Please shave the treatment area 3–4 days before your appointment, but avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, or sugaring.

Electrolysis works by treating each individual hair follicle, so we need enough visible hair growth to properly insert the probe and target the follicle. Shaving a few days before usually gives the hair enough time to come through, while still keeping the area manageable for treatment.

Make Yourself More Comfortable

Hydrate ahead of time

Please aim to drink around 3L of water the day before, the day of, and the day after your appointment.

Well-hydrated skin can be easier to treat and may help support comfort, skin response, and recovery after your session.

Use numbing cream if needed

If you’re concerned about discomfort, you can apply a topical numbing cream in a thick layer 1–2 hours before your appointment.

For best results, follow the product instructions carefully. You may also cover the area with plastic wrap after applying, if directed by the product, to help it stay in place until your appointment. You can buy over the counter lidocaine from Shoppers Drug Mart or Amazon (Zensa, Dr. Numb, EMLA, etc.)

Ibuprofen / Acetaminophen

If you’re worried about sensitivity, you may choose to take an over-the-counter pain reliever like Tylenol or Advil before your appointment, as long as it is safe for you.

Many clients prefer acetaminophen because it can help with discomfort without increasing bleeding risk. It’s best to avoid aspirin before your appointment unless your doctor has told you to take it, as it can increase the chance of bleeding or bruising.

Always follow the dosage instructions on the package, and check with a pharmacist or healthcare provider first if you’re pregnant, taking medications, have liver/kidney issues, stomach ulcers, a bleeding disorder, or any medical condition that makes pain relievers risky.

Bring Entertainment

Bring something to watch or listen to

You’re welcome to bring your phone and cast to the TV, connect to the speaker, or bring headphones if you’d prefer to listen privately. Many clients like watching a show, listening to a podcast, or playing music during treatment.
